The Urban Butterflies

Me-City: the urban butterflies.

NYC shapes itself into a colossal entity, in constant change and growth. I let my mind wonder, and in the street corners I recognize the corners of my mind.

I walk the places of the city and feel its inhabitants.. .I feel their pain and anger; I feel their regrets and longings…and I feel their joy: my own.

You are not what my eyes see. You don’t just feel the people around you, because you are one with them.

You are not a body walking the streets of the city… but, everything that surrounds you: the city… the wings of the butterfly!

The Urban Butterflies evolved from an earlier series of solo pedestrians walking in cityscapes.  The surroundings morphed into butterfly wings and the paintings can be seen as both a lone figure walking through the city and a butterfly. This duality in meaning reflects the illusion that we are individuals living within an external and physical reality.  However there is a hidden truth behind: there is neither an individual nor an external reality.

The pedestrian walking in the city is a representation of Life lived through the ego. “When I see myself through the ego, I believe that I exist as an individual living within a Reality outside myself, my context (the wings of the butterfly.)”

But it is not clear that there is a Reality “outside” the Self . Quantum mechanics concludes that it is impossible to detach the observer from what is being observed and that the act of observation affects what is being observed. We are entangled with what “surrounds” us.

What if we suspend the belief in a Reality in which we live?  Then everything is “Self,” the distinction between internal and external realities dissolves and we understand that things don’t change depending on the observer because there is no independent reality to observe.  So instead of understanding the world as a physical reality that is being perceived and interpreted through our senses, Reality becomes a projection of the mind, an illusion.  This extends to the ego: the ego is also a mental illusion…but if we are not individuals living in a vast space, what are we?

Consciousness is the essence of everything, the true nature of the Universe…everything emanates from it.  Through the mind consciousness shapes into everything that is us and everything that surrounds us: the appearance of Reality, the appearance of physicality, space and time.

Consciousness connects us all like drops of water in the ocean. My feelings are not really mine but also everybody else’s. I feel the people around me because I am one with them. We are all essentially the same: Uni-verse.

The urban butterfly paintings represent the individual united with his surroundings, the inner and outer worlds entwined in sameness. Who we believe we are cannot be separated from who we believe to be everything and everybody else. We are both, we are the pedestrian as we are the city. We are the butterfly. We are one.
